Pooja Chilukuri, Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and Certified Health Coach, graciously contributed to our Wellness Blog discussing the 5 R’s of eating healthy - Eat Real foods not processed food like substances, Reduce Exposure to pesticides and chemical additives, Reduce Sugar Intake, Remove Trans Fats and Ramp up the Phytonutrients.


It’s simple according to Pooja, “The food we eat is ultimately tied to the quality of our life and health”
. So true yet often, and yes I’m included, we eat things that we shouldn’t and we wonder why we don’t have energy?  Wellness is like a chain that includes eating well, exercising both your brain and body, engaging people and socializing, etc.  Any link that is weak affects the strength of the chain.

Did you know that 3 out of 4 people over the age of 65 are on medication for chronic diseases, over 70% of which are preventable? The Center for Disease Control reports that up to 40% of deaths due to these illnesses can be avoided, further validating the importance of lifestyle and nutritional interventions. Taking charge of our health begins with a shift in mindset and requires embracing the “self-care=health care” model. 

The National Wellness Institute describes the self-care model as 6 dimensional- Physical, Social, Intellectual, Spiritual, Emotional and Occupational. Both eating well and moving well are major components of the physical dimension. However, to eat well we must first answer the fundamental question- what should we eat?

The subject of what constitutes healthy eating can get very complex, given the shift in dietary trends, and ever evolving nutritional guidelines. For individual dietary needs and health requirements, consultation with a physician or dietitian may be appropriate. However, regardless of nutritional beliefs and dietary restrictions, using the 5R rule can help make eating well simple and easy. The 5 Rs of eating well are as follows- Eat Real foods not processed food like substances, Reduce Exposure to pesticides and chemical additives, Reduce Sugar Intake, Remove Trans Fats and Ramp up the Phytonutrients.
